Ethio Djibouti Rail Transport reported revenue of 998.13 million birr in the first quarter of fiscal 2016, according to CEO Abdi Zenabe (DR).

November 17, 2016 (EDR): Abdi Zebebe (DR), CEO of Ethio-Djibouti Railway Transport SC, told the Ethiopian Press Agency that the quarter handled 63 thousand 81 passengers and transported 587 thousand tons of import and export cargo, earning 998.13 million birr. In the first quarter of 2020, it was estimated to collect revenue of Rs 875 crore, which exceeded plan. In the first quarter, 670,000 tons of incoming and outgoing cargo were transported, 587,000 tons were transported, he said, adding that 37,500 passengers were planned to transport to various destinations and 63,081 were achieved. According to Dr. Abdi, the railway line is in service at 20 stations. He added that preparations are underway to open new stations. Dr. Abdi said EDR is providing freight and passenger rail services on Dire Dawa, Mojo, Adama, Lebu, Ndode, Bikena and Meiso as well as Dewole railway station lines. He noted that students’ textbooks and soil fertilizer are being transported by the Ethio-Djibouti railway, adding that various vehicles, fruits and vegetables and various products are being transported. Dr. Abdi said that there is a plan to transport cement and sand by rail in the future, adding that preparations are underway to help with this. According to Dr. Abdi, EDR has increased its total cargo transport capacity from one point three million tons to two million tons. Dr. Abdi recalled that since January 2015, more than three billion birr has been collected in six months. More than four billion birr is planned to be collected by the end of December 2016, he said. The railway line connects Ethiopia and Djibouti and transports various goods from the port to the center of the country, contributing significantly to the growth of the transport sector.
